About Powerplants and Emissions

The principal functions and responsibilties of this section are:

Certification of Engines and Powerplants

  • Certification of Pratt & Whitney Canada engines and subsequent support to the Company in obtaining type certification in the other major industrial countries around the world, including the USA and member nations of the European Union.
  • The certification review of imported engines (The depth of a given review is determined by internal Aircraft Certification Branch guidelines).
  • The certification of the engine installations on both domestic and foreign aircraft.

Harmonisation of Design Requirements

  • Active participation in the international effort to harmonise the requirements of FAR33/CAM533 and JAR ‘E’. The section has members on several of the Working Groups involved in the detailed review and harmonisation process.

Engine Emissions

  • Participation in the generation of international standards and test methods with respect to gaseous and smoke emissions from engines. A technical resource to the Branch on engine emissions

Aircraft Noise

  • Participation in the generation of international standards and test methods with respect to aircraft noise reduction and evaluation. A technical resource to the Branch on aircraft noise issues.

Technical Standards

  • Participation in the aviation related technical committees of such organisations as the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Canadian General Standards Board
