In Service History Information

How is the aircraft performing in-service? You need to know!

As part of a design approval process a Delegate should be cognizant of the in service performance of existing components to determine if they are performing as intended and ensure design modifications are effective. One source of information available to you is a database of service difficulties collected from Canada, United States and Australia on all products. This database allows for specific searches on numerous fields including part number to obtain a description of the reported difficulty.

In Canada, those required to report service difficulties are specified in the CAR's. These include Type Certificate Holders, Manufacturers, certain Operators or persons suspecting unapproved parts.

The FAA and the Australian CAA have a similar requirement. Transport Canada, FAA and Australia CAA have agreed to share this data as part of our ICAO responsibilities for Continuing Airworthiness. Transport Canada uses the information to assist in identifying safety related service difficulties with particular focus on Canadian approved products.

In recent months Continuing Airworthiness has released a WEB based SDR submission and query application (WSDRS) to simplify reporting and allow easier access to the data. You can access the database at www.tc.gc.ca/wsdrs and register on-line as follows:

Select: New Registrant
Organization Type: "Other"
Complete form using Organization Name: Company/Delegate Number

If you do not wish to register a simple Quick Query can be conducted from the WSDRS homepage (www.tc.gc.ca/wsdrs). Registered users have access to advances query capabilities. It should be noted that the data is not vetted for technical accuracy by Transport Canada. The name of the submitter is not provided for privacy consideration; however, Transport Canada will conduct a review of a particular SDR if warranted.

Remember frequent monitoring of the database is one means to have a current understanding of how your
product is doing in-service.
