Subject

The importance of reviewing the approved Emergency Response Plans within the Airport Operations Manual (AOM), particularly, pertaining directly to on-site medical emergencies.

Purpose

The purpose of this bulletin is to encourage airport operators to review their approved emergency response plans to ensure that appropriate procedures and communications information are in place, in the event of possible scenarios involving the transfer of passengers or other individuals suspected of having an infectious disease, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Emergency Response Plans

Particular attention must be made to both the currency and completeness of the following information:

  • Identification of all involved agencies;
  • Telephone numbers and notification procedures of all involved agencies;
  • Responsibility and role of each involved agency;
  • Coordination of the actions to be taken by involved agencies; and
  • Coordination of the response by involved agencies.

It should be noted that Health Canada identifies that an important element in dealing with suspected affected individuals is isolation. More detailed requirements have been developed on this subject, which are pending implementation in the regulations.

Guidance

In addition to the general requirements in Aerodrome Standards and Recommended Practices, (TP312), 4th edition, information in revising an AOM can be obtained by contacting the appropriate office of the Regional Manager, Aerodrome Safety.
