Flight Test Exercises - Ex. 17 - Steep Turn

Aim

To determine the candidate's ability to perform a level coordinated steep turn.

Description

The candidate will be asked to execute a steep turn through 360°, with an angle of bank of 30°, and roll out on the original heading. The candidate will specify the selected altitude, airspeed and initial heading prior to entering the turn.

Performance Criteria

Assessment will be based on the candidate's ability to:

  1. maintain an effective lookout;

  2. enter a smooth, coordinated steep turn;

  3. divide attention appropriately between outside visual references and instrument indications;

  4. maintain specified altitude (±100 feet) and specified airspeed (±10 knots);

  5. maintain required angle of bank (±10 degrees);

  6. initiate timely roll out for the return to the original heading (±10 degrees).
