Database for Bird and Wildlife Collisions with Aircraft in Canada
For each calendar year, the office of the Wildlife Control Specialist prepares a summary document of all reported collisions between aircraft and wildlife in Canada. These reports are available for viewing. For any additional information not illustrated in the summary documents please inquire to Transport Canada's Wildlife Control Specialist.
Improvements to the accuracy and quality of the data for annual periods 1995 to present are complete. In conjunction with this, ongoing system improvements to reflect the availability of new technological developments and improve performance and capability are well underway.
In addition, incidents and accidents involving collisions or near misses between aircraft and birds or other wildlife can be reported to Transport Canada on this website using the available format.
Wildlife Control Procedures Manual (TP 11500)
Transport Canada's Wildlife Control Procedures Manual is an operational document that provides background information on the hazards that wildlife present to the aviation industry, and specific details are provided so that airport operators can be informed of the latest techniques for controlling wildlife at airports. Information and addresses for suppliers of wildlife those animal species that are most often involved in aviation safety incidents. The manual is available for view, and specific information on how to deal with airport wildlife control problems can be downloaded.
Airport Wildlife Management Bulletins
Transport Canada regularly produces Airport Wildlife Management Bulletins that are available for view. These bulletins provide updates on issues and recent advances in the science of airport wildlife management, and highlight specific aviation safety issues related to wildlife. Thirty-six bulletins have been prepared to date, and new editions will be provided as they are completed.
Proceedings from Bird Strike Committee Canada
Bird Strike Committee Canada is a forum for the exchange of information related to the bird hazard to aircraft issue. The committee meets twice each year; once in Ottawa in the fall, and at a different site each spring. Sites are chosen so that committee members and participants can be apprised of specific issues that relate to bird hazards, and provide their advice in order to help resolve these issues. The proceedings, agenda, members/participants and lists of appendices are available for view. Aviation Safety Letter / Aviation Safety Vortex
Transport Canada's System Safety Branch publishes a series of safety letters which are sent to all pilots in Canada. Specific Aviation Safety letters that relate to bird hazard issues are available for view, and a link is provided so that other articles contained in the letters can be viewed.
Awareness Material and Reports
The office of the Wildlife Control Specialist has available a range of material designed to provide education and awareness related to wildlife issues associated with the aviation industry. A list of this material is provided for view, as well as a partial list of reports and studies that have been completed over the years.
Bird Avoidance Brochure - AIP Bird Hazard Section
Transport Canada has produced a brochure called 'Bird Avoidance' which summarizes bird strike information for pilots. It was distributed to holders of the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) along with an amended bird hazard section and new bird migration maps. These documents are available for view.
