| Query: |
Standard 566.07(2) allows applicants who obtained their basic training through training systems other than a Transport Canada ATO to be eligible to qualify for full or partial exemption from the basic training requirement of Appendix A of this standard, subject to an evaluation of the training received against the standard specified in 566.03(4)(b) and Division II. A review of the basic training curriculum requirements of Division II identifies that there are similarities between the general airframe/Powerplant/systems topics specified for the M, E and S ratings. One of the training courses that has been recognized by TC as "acceptable" towards the basic training requirement for an M rated licence is the Thompson Education Direct, Aircraft Mechanics course; which provides the required theoretical training in these general topic areas. Can an applicant applying for an E or S rated AME licence, who is required to obtain additional aircraft maintenance theory training, take the Thompson Education Direct (TED) course to fulfill this requirement? |

| Proposal: |
HQ has completed a review of the TED Aircraft Mechanics course and recognizes that there are similarities in some topic areas between the M, E and S TC core curriculum requirements in the following areas: Completion of the Thompson course addresses the Div II curriculum item numbers indicated under the M Curriculum" column below. In light of these similarities between the M, E and S, TC is prepared to accept portions of the TED Aircraft Mechanics course as an alternate method of obtaining the required theoretical training for those areas of similarity as indicated below:
(*) = Theoretical knowledge for these areas of the S curriculum would be obtained throughout the subject matter covered by the M-curriculum items 5.0 and 6.0 The following components of the TED course are required to be completed in order to meet the training requirements as noted above for the E or S rating, as the necessary subject matter is dispersed throughout these study areas:
Note that acceptance of the above training are for the areas listed above only, completion the TED course will not satisfy the full basic training requirement for an S or E rating. TED may not allow candidates to take a portion of the Aircraft Mechanics course, but require that they take the full course - this is at the discretion of the ATO, not TC. |
