Implementation Schedule

Transport Canada's vision is that SMS will be implemented in all regulated civil aviation organizations by 2015.

Today, Canada's largest passenger air carriers operate with SMS policies, processes, procedures and systems in place. In fact, SMS covers more than 90% of passenger kilometers.

For the remainder of the industry, Transport Canada will implement SMS during a three-year phase-in period that begins after the SMS regulations for that sector come into force.

For small operators, Transport Canada has adjusted the SMS implementation schedule to provide additional time to refine procedures, training and guidance material based on inspector and industry feedback.
