Education and promotional activities are important components of Transport Canada’s Aviation Safety Program; however, as the program moves towards 2015, a change in direction for these activities is appropriate.
The Canadian Aviation Safety Seminar (CASS) was introduced in response to a requirement for current information relating to regulations and safety issues. Over the last few years, safety information has become more readily accessible through Websites, aviation seminars or conferences launched by our industry partners in Canada and around the world. Two such examples are the Safety and Quality Summit and the International Winter Operations Conference.
For those reasons, Civil Aviation has decided to discontinue the CASS to focus resources on the activities necessary to address current awareness, education, and promotion-of-safety issues through oversight activities and specialized seminars. Two examples are the Canadian Aviation Executives’ Safety Network (CAESN) and regulatory information sessions on safety management systems (SMS). Both focus on sharing best practices and proactively managing risks to aviation safety.
Furthermore, the Transport Canada Aviation Safety Award will continue to be presented to recognize persons or organizations that have contributed to aviation safety in Canada in an exceptional way. The award will be presented ever year on February 23, National Aviation Day.
Please be assured that Civil Aviation will continue to be involved in promoting aviation safety. Our approach will be strategic—providing targeted interventions that correspond to the needs of the industry, and effectively educating stakeholders about relevant safety issues.
