Transportation Technology and Innovation

Transport Canada's Transportation Technology and Innovation initiative works to make Canada's transportation system safer, more competitive and more environmentally responsible by identifying opportunities for innovative research to address challenges in the transportation sector, establishing collaborative research partnerships, and developing and implementing forward-looking solutions using cutting-edge technologies. It sets policy and strategic direction for departmental R&D, and develops, designs, negotiates and manages technology research programs.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

The application of advanced sensor, information and communications technologies, also known as "smart" or "intelligent systems", promises to make the transportation of people and goods more efficient, more reliable, safer and more environmentally friendly.

Transport Canada is a leader in ITS and works to create an environment that stimulates the collaborative development and deployment of ITS across urban and rural Canada to improve safety and maximize efficiency, and make the Canadian ITS industry a leader by positioning it to meet future Canadian needs and compete in the growing global marketplace.
