Aircraft boarding and seating for travellers in wheelchairs

Objective
To reduce the number of transfers required in the aircraft boarding and seating of travellers in wheelchairs.

Description
The study reviewed the current systems, procedures, and equipment used for boarding large aircraft, and assessed the effectiveness of air carrier training programs. The evaluation included the wheelchairs provided in terminals, boarding and on-board chairs, cabin configurations, and lavatories.

Results
The study team's recommendations for improvements and for modifications to current procedures and equipment were reviewed by the Advisory Committee on Accessible Transportation and by members of the Air Transport Association of Canada (ATAC). The ATAC reviewers identified those recommendations that could feasibly be implemented by carriers.
