ITS R&D Plan for Canada

Canada’s ITS strategy aims to stimulate the collaborative development and deployment of ITS across urban and rural Canada to improve safety, maximize the use and efficiency of the existing multimodal transportation system, and make the Canadian ITS industry a leader in ITS technologies. The program is funded through the $600 million Strategic Highways Initiative Program (SHIP), which includes $100 million for initiatives that improve integration of the transportation system, such as ITS.

The R&D Plan forms a major component of the ITS strategy. Individual projects are managed by TDC on behalf of the ITS Office of Transport Canada.

Projects respond to four broad priorities:

  • urban transportation: traffic management and control, public transit
  • safety, security and trade: safety, security, and commercial vehicle operations
  • environment: energy, road weather information systems (RWIS)
  • foundations: standards development
