Bulletin No.: 15/1984

Date (Y-M-D): 1984-10-09

Subject: Misuse of Inflated Boats

Coated fabrics from which inflated equipment is made are resistant to most forms of chemical attack, but can be damaged by solvents in certain paints.

Consequently inflated equipment carried as part of the statutory lifesaving equipment on board ships should not be used as overside painting platforms. Such equipment is to be maintained in good repair on the vessel, in readiness for emergency use.

This is not intended to preclude the use of inflated boats (or lifeboats) for the transport or transfer of personnel, in conditions where the boat can readily be returned to the vessel if there were an emergency. It is considered that such use gives crews training in the use of the equipment.
