Subject: Insulated Buoyant Immersion Suit Zipper Faults

This Bulletin replaces Bulletin No. 01/1986 and has been replaced by Bulletin No. 08/1991.

Note: In the first sentence the word "discussed" should have read "discovered" as follows.

1. It has been discovered that a number of insulated buoyant immersion suits have been manufactured, placed on the market, and subsequently found during on board testing, to have faulty zipper closures.
2. During donning and fastening, it has been found that the zipper teeth, after closing, were failing to mesh properly and that the zipper teeth were "popping" open behind the zip closure slide mechanism or that during the operation of closing the zip, the slide mechanisms were becoming jammed.
3. These problems have been found on immersion suits fitted with "Talon" zip fastener.
4. Mariners are strongly urged to inspect all immersion suits in service, for faulty zipper operation.
5. Upon discovery of any immersion suit found with the aforementioned zipper faults, arrangements should be made with the manufacturer of the immersion suit to have necessary repairs or replacement undertaken.
6. Talon zippers can be identified by the word "TALON" embossed on the zipper slide mechanism.
