If all vessels are prohibited from an area, the sign must be in the shape of a rhomboid (a square rotated 45 degrees to appear as a diamond) and contain a cross.
A circular sign with a diagonal bar is used to communicate a single prohibition or restriction.
A sign which communicates several prohibitions or restrictions must be in the shape of a cartouche (an elongated circle).
If the boating prohibition or restriction is subject to certain conditions, such as applying only at certain hours of the day, the top half of the sign must be a semi-circle bordered in international orange and the bottom half a rectangle bordered in green. The half circle will have a pictorial representation of the restriction, while the rectangle describes the conditions which apply to the restriction.
To indicate boundaries of the waters to which a restriction applies, directional disks may be used with pointers indicating the side on which the prohibition or restriction applies.
When a restriction is limited to a sector in a body of water from a marked geographical point, the sign describing the restriction must be accompanied by another sign featuring a black compass rose with the section of the compass to which the restriction applies coloured in international orange.
When a sign has to be marked directly on a buoy, a band of international orange must be applied immediately above and below the sign.
