Safety is a shared responsibility and is Transport Canada's top priority.

While the majority of Canadian vessels are conventional in their construction and operation, there are significant exceptions. The Special-purpose Vessels Regulations provide an effective means of establishing and promoting a consistent national application of safety standards for certain non-conventional vessels and operations, such as commercial river rafting. As the Regulatory Reform initiative identifies other unique marine operations, they will be added to these Regulations.
