Interim Registration for Human-powered Vessels, or Sailing Vessels and Small Power-driven Vessels with Propulsion Motors Less Than 10hp (7.5kW)

Overview

Section 46 of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 (CSA 2001), requires that all non-pleasure vessels, including government owned vessels, be registered in either the Canadian Register of Vessels or in the Small Vessel Register. Those vessels solely used for pleasure are not required to be registered under the CSA 2001 but may do so voluntarily.

Registration for all human-powered vessels (such as canoes or kayaks), or sailing vessels and small power-driven vessels with propulsion motors less than 10 hp (7.5 kW) is not required. Registration will continue to be required for commercial river rafts and government vessels.

Vessel owners or operators must still comply with construction, safety, and pollution requirements set out in the Canada Shipping Act, 2001.

Should the owners of such a vessel wish to register their vessel, they are free to do so voluntarily. A new simplified registration process has been created for human-powered vessels, or sailing vessels and small power-driven vessels with propulsion motors less than 10 hp (7.5 kW) for those who wish to register voluntarily. The registration process will continue to be delivered by the Vessel Registration office in the National Capital Region.
