How to Apply to the MTRB

Exemptions and Equivalencies

To request an equivalently safe alternative requirement for a safety requirement or an exemption from a non-safety requirement regarding a Canadian vessel or a certificate of competency, please prepare a letter outlining your request and send it to the Transport Canada Centre or Regional Office closest to you.

This letter should contain your name; your contact address; the subject of the request (the vessel or person requiring the exemption or equivalency); the applicable regulatory provision; your proposed alternative; and reasons why safety and the marine environment will not be jeopardized by the proposed equivalency or a justification for the proposed exemption.

A marine safety inspector will contact you once your letter has been received to discuss the proposed exemption or equivalency to ensure that your request is fully understood.
