8.1 General
- This course is vessel-specific. When taken after the Basic Safety course (MED A1) or the Small Seasonal Passenger-carrying Vessel Safety course (for non-certificated personnel), it meets the requirements for training with respect to Small Passenger-carrying Vessel Safety (MED A2).
- It is intended for holders of a certificate of competency as Master, Limited, or Chief Mate, Limited, of a passenger vessel of less than 60 gross tonnage.
8.2 Equipment requirements
- Safety training manual for each participant;
- The vessel’s equipment.
8.3 Duration
Minimum 6 hours’ theoretical and practical training, including 0.5 hours for evaluation.
8.4 Specific instructor qualifications
The main course instructor must hold, at a minimum, a certificate of competency as Master, Limited, and have completed MED B1 and B2 or MED with respect to STCW basic safety.
8.5 Goals and criteria
- To provide officers with a knowledge of:
- current regulations with regard to fire and boat drills, life saving apparatus and safety equipment;
- proper stowage, care, maintenance and servicing requirements for safety equipment and appliances on board the vessel;
- crew management with regard to safety, training and organization;
- shipboard administration and appropriate record-keeping;
- crowd and passenger control.
