Transport Canada’s Marine Security Program for Approved Ship Security Training is provided to ensure that training programs and courses offered by various providers meet the course content requirements as called for in the Marine Transportation Security Regulations as well as international requirements under the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW 2010).

Mandatory recognition program for approved ship security training courses

Transport Canada’s mandatory recognition program for approved ship security training courses aims to ensure that marine security training courses offered by various providers meet the course content requirements as called for in the Marine Transportation Security Regulations and the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW 2010) Code.  There are three (3) modules for training institutions that are part of the Recognition Program for Approved Ship Security Training Courses:

  • Ship Security Officer (SSO)
  • Vessel Personnel with Security Responsibilities (VPWSR)
  • Vessel Personnel without Security Responsibilities (VPWOSR)

Testimonial for seafarers with and without security responsibilities

The Marine Transportation Security Regulations published in the Canada Gazette, Part I, on April 27, 2013, permits seafarers with and without security responsibilities who meet certain conditions to complete a testimonial. Transport Canada, Marine Safety & Security Forms Unit, is in the process of converting the PDF fillable forms based on priority usage.

Forms are being reinstated in the external forms catalogue upon conversion.  In the meantime, if a form is not available online, stakeholders can order a PDF fillable form via e-mail (marinesafety-securitemaritime@tc.gc.ca). Our service standard is one business day.
