Domestic Ferries Security Regulations

Domestic ferries provide an important means of transportation for millions of Canadians each year. New Domestic Ferries Security Regulations, established under section 5 of the Marine Transportation Security Act, will enhance the security of the Canadian marine transportation system through the establishment of a framework to detect security incidents affecting domestic ferries and facilities.

The purpose of the Domestic Ferries Security Regulations is to enhance marine security requirements by increasing the level of protection and to mitigate unlawful interference with the Canadian marine transportation system. The Regulations will safeguard ferry operators and their employees, adjacent communities, ferry workers and the travelling public. The Regulations are a blend of prescriptive and performance-based requirements that allow operators flexibility to implement security procedures and systems appropriate to their unique operational environments.

Regulating domestic ferries is part of the government’s larger strategy to strengthen Canadian transportation security while facilitating the free flow of people and goods.
