Marine Security – Regulatory Affairs
On July 1, 2004, Canada implemented the ISPS Code through the
Marine Transportation Security Regulations (MTSR) under the authority of the
Marine Transportation Security Act (MTSA).
A working group was established in November 2007 to undertake a comprehensive review of the Marine Transportation Security Regulations and propose amendments to:
- address issues and lessons learned since 2004,
- clarify regulatory requirements, and
- where possible, harmonize with the United States and other international partners.
Preliminary discussions with industry last fall and winter provided a number of recommendations and identified several areas where the Regulations require clarification or amendment. Amending the Marine Transportation Security Regulations will address both internal and external stakeholder comments, concerns and suggestions, as well as numerous clarification requests and interpretation issues.
