Marine Security Initiatives

As Chair of the Interdepartmental Marine Security Working Group (IMSWG), Transport Canada coordinates the Government of Canada’s overall marine security policy.

Many other federal departments and agencies engage in marine security activities in their day-to-day operations, as well. For example,

  • The Department of National Defence (particularly the Navy);
  • Royal Canadian Mounted Police;
  • Canada Border Services Agency; and,
  • Canadian Coast Guard.

The Canada Port Authorities, which own and operate Canada’s major ports, as well as private sector owners and operators, must ensure the security of their facilities under Transport Canada’s regulatory requirements.
