Marine Transportation Security Act
The Marine Transportation Security Act (MTSA) provides the legislative framework for the security of the marine transportation system in Canada. It applies to vessels and marine facilities in Canada, Canadian vessels outside of Canada and marine installations and structures. It does not apply to vessels and marine facilities under the authority of the Minister of National Defense or military vessels of a foreign country.
In force since December 1994, the MTSA provides the Minister of Transport with the authority to create regulations, security measures and rules to protect the security of Canada’s marine transportation system.
The following regulations have come into force as a result of the MTSA, pursuant to the section 5 of the Act:
- The Marine Transportation Security Regulations
- The Domestic Ferries Security Regulation - Transport Canada
