Important Safety Advisory on COSCO and Eddie Bauer Child/Booster 2-in-1 Restraints
For immediate release
February 5, 2009
Transport Canada is advising the public that when in forward-facing mode, the harness system on certain Cosco and Eddie Bauer child/booster 2-in-1 restraints that holds the child into the seat can loosen. The resulting slack in the harness system reduces the effectiveness of the child seat in the event of a motor vehicle collision, which could create excessive movement of the child's body and head, and lead to serious injury. To date, there have been no reported injuries associated with this problem.
79,254 units manufactured between November 1, 2003 and December 31, 2005 inclusive are affected. These models are:
- Cosco Adventurer: 2209CBNG
- Cosco Ventura DX: 2249CFLG
- Eddie Bauer: CRS/HBB — 2258CSHL, 2285CEBN, 2285CMBP, 2289CAFD, 2289CARD, 2289CBGL, 2289CBLD, 2289CHLT, 2289CHML, 2289CMAC
Company Action and Consumer Recourse: On August 31, 2007, Transport Canada issued a public notice (2001-PO5) to inform Canadians of the harness slippage of all Dorel Juvenile Group Inc.'s 3-in-1 infant/child/booster restraints. Due to additional complaints received by Transport Canada and Dorel on restraints not included in the original notice, the company extended the original public notice to include the above mentioned child/booster 2-in-1 restraints. Dorel will provide a replacement adjuster strap for the affected models, which will eliminate slippage.
Consumers who have completed and returned their registration card will receive notice by mail. Those who have not sent in the registration card should contact Dorel Distributions Canada at the toll free number (1-800-219-0540) or via email at email@example.com. Until the replacement adjuster strap is received, Dorel Distributions Canada recommends the continued use of the product.
A public notice was issued by Transport Canada on January 30, 2009, and further information on the Cosco and Eddie Bauer car seat harness slippage can be found on Transport Canada's website at: http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/safedrivers/childsafety/notices/menu.htm
