No. H010/10
For release - January 29, 2010
OTTAWA — Transport Canada today announced airspace restrictions are now in effect around the Vancouver International Airport and the Whistler Athletes’ Village. The restrictions come into effect with the opening of the Olympic Village on January 29, 2010, and will remain in force for the entire duration of the Games until the Paralympic Village closes on March 24, 2010. General aviation operations in the vicinity of the Olympics will require additional security screening, and registration and authorization processes.
Operations in some of the Olympic Restricted Areas will be limited to emergency and security aircraft only. These airspace restrictions are part of the safety and security requirements for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and are described to pilots in Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) that have been issued by NAV CANADA. Additional details on the Vancouver 2010 Aviation Security Regulations can be obtained by visiting this link.
Transport Canada, the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit, NAV CANADA and other aviation planners have informed air operators of these airspace restrictions in order to minimize the impact of the restrictions on the travelling public. Special arrangements have been made for humanitarian and safety-related flights to use the restricted airspace as required. Restrictions will also affect general aviation operations such as those of flight training schools and charter aircraft.
