OTTAWA — The Honourable Senator Rose-May Poirier, together with Stephen Brunet, president of the Northern New Brunswick Airport Authority Inc., announced today a
$2.2-million contribution from the Government of Canada for important safety upgrades to the Bathurst Airport.

“Today I’m pleased to announce funding that will allow the Bathurst Airport to make important safety upgrades, and sustain excellent service to passengers and businesses throughout the community,” said Senator Poirier. “Smaller airports are vital to many communities across the country, which is why the Government of Canada is taking action to invest in these much-needed safety upgrades.”

“The Bathurst Airport is an important infrastructure serving the needs of thousands of passengers yearly in Northern New Brunswick. The Airport Authority is very excited to be moving forward with the rehabilitation of the Bathurst Regional Airport’s runway and to be acquiring new snow removal equipment,” said Mr. Brunet. “We appreciate that the Government of Canada has been able to provide vital financial support under the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP). These projects would not have been possible without this important program.”

The Government of Canada is investing $1.9 million in the Bathurst Airport under the Airports Capital Assistance Program for emergency funding for the rehabilitation of runway 10/28 and $326,402 to replace the existing runway sweeper and snow plow truck.

This year, the Government of Canada will invest more than $42 million in safety-related improvements at airports across Canada. These improvements will be funded in 2010-2011 under ACAP.
