HALIFAX — The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today met with the Atlantic Gateway Advisory Council. At the meeting, the Minister and the council discussed collaboration and the implementation of the Atlantic Gateway Strategy that was announced in March 2011, as well as issues affecting the global competitiveness of the Atlantic Gateway.

"The advisory council provided valuable advice during the developmental stage of the Atlantic Gateway Strategy," said Minister Ashfield. "We believe that Atlantic Canada is uniquely poised to capture additional economic opportunities as a result of Canada's Atlantic Gateway. We will continue to work together to implement our Gateway Strategy, which will ultimately help position Atlantic Canada as a key entry point into North America."

"The advisory council welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with the Minister to highlight and discuss issues impacting the movement of international trade through and the competitiveness of the Atlantic Gateway and Trade Corridor," said Wes Armour, Chair of the Atlantic Gateway Advisory Council.

The council agreed to identify key policy and regulatory issues from a private-sector perspective and continue to provide advice to the Minister. The Minister will continue to meet semi-annually with the council to help foster the ongoing public-private sector partnership necessary to grow international trade to the benefit of Atlantic Canada.

The Atlantic Gateway Advisory Council is a private-sector organization comprised of 13 CEO-level representatives from transportation providers and system users across Atlantic Canada. The council works with governments to identify and address the range of issues impacting the competitiveness of the Atlantic Gateway and Trade Corridor.
