FREDERICTON, NB — Mr. Mike Allen, Member of Parliament for Tobique-Mactaquac, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, announced today that the Fredericton Airport was granted the official designation of international airport. Accordingly, the name of the airport was officially changed to "Fredericton International Airport".
"The Fredericton International Airport plays a key transportation role in New Brunswick and is important to the province's economy," said Mr. Allen. "The designation will allow the Fredericton Airport Authority to better promote the airport as an international destination."
Transport Canada has already taken the appropriate steps to inform the domestic and international communities by publishing the new name in various aeronautical publications, including the Canada Air Pilot, the Canada Flight Supplement, the Designated Airspace Handbook, and aeronautical charts.
"This is great news for the Fredericton International Airport", said Mr. J. David Innes, President and CEO of the Fredericton International Airport. "We all worked very hard to achieve the international designation and it will certainly help bring the travelers of central New Brunswick closer to the global stage, while providing tangible benefits to the community."
The Greater Fredericton Airport Authority is responsible for operational, management and developmental control of the Fredericton International Airport. The airport handles about 240 000 passengers per year. It has recently completed the addition of an 8,500 square foot Pavilion to accommodate international charters and military flights.
