Baby Trend and Transport Canada wish to inform the public that the above models of infant restraint systems are non-compliant with sub-section 7 (f)(i) (currently subsection 316(1)(e)(i)) of the Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seats Safety Regulations. The regulations specify that each infant restraint system must be affixed with a specific warning that the infant restraint is for use only in a forward-facing vehicle seat equipped with a lower universal anchorage system or with a vehicle safety belt. The subject models do not contain the requisite warning.

The Owner’s manual included with the infant car seats correctly states all warnings and clearly defines and illustrates both proper and improper vehicle seating positions for installation and use of the infant car seat. The manual also states for the consumer to contact the vehicle manufacturer if they have any questions regarding installation in their particular situation.

The labels have been revised and the problem corrected. In addition, Baby Trend has advised that it is not aware of any incidents related to this issue in Canada or the United States.

Baby Trend and Transport Canada wish to inform all parents and caregivers of the omission so as to eliminate any possibility of installing the infant restraint in either a side or rear-facing seat.

Background and Company Action:

The non-compliance was noted during the annual testing and audit inspection program conducted as part of Transport Canada’s safety compliance assessment program. The company was notified of the technical non-compliance and Baby Trend will provide a free label replacement kit and detailed instructions to all registered owners.

Consumer Action and Recourse:

Consumers that have not registered their restraint system are advised to contact Baby Trend at 1-800-328-7363 so that the company can also send them a free label replacement kit and detailed instructions. Owners that are uncertain about whether or not they have registered their unit should contact Baby Trend at the above number.

Until the non-compliant label is replaced, the restraint system can continue to be used in accordance with the instructions found in the manual. The affected restraint systems should not be returned to the Baby Trend retailer.
