Transport Canada, with the help of its partners Environment Canada, Natural Resources Canada, the provinces, and the territories, will be conducting The Canadian Vehicle Use Study (CVUS) with the Canadian public, in 2012.

The annual CVUS is carried out nationally and its purpose is to provide annual estimates of the amount of road travel by various vehicle types across Canada. By collecting information from randomly selected light vehicle drivers, the CVUS is Canada's best source of information about:

  • Distance driven (vehicle–kilometres);
  • Fuel consumption and efficiency; and
  • Passenger–kilometres (occupancy).

The study also provides estimates of the amount of road travel and breaks down these estimates by types of vehicles and characteristics such as age and sex of driver, time of day and season.

Objective

Transport Canada has actively researched alternatives to the paper trip log (for light vehicles). Main goals are to increase quantity/quality of data collected, reduce respondent burden, and deliver at a lower total cost.

The Canadian Vehicle Use Study provides information that helps determine trends and develop programs and policies designed to keep us safer and lower our fuel consumption.
