Churchill Airport - Manitoba

Churchill Airport was built in 1942 by the United States Air Force because of its strategic position for their intercontinental air routes. The Air Force operated the airport until the end of the Second World War, then turned it over to the US Department of National Defence. Transport Canada acquired the airport in 1964, and our role has broadened considerably since then. The National Airports Program designated Churchill as a "Remote" airport, meaning TC retains ownership of the airport and is responsible for its operation. Since TC took over the airport, air traffic has grown from 3, 682 movements to 75,000 movements in 2005.

Churchill is well known as the "polar bear capital of the world", which plays a major role in the town's tourism industry. Tourists flock to Churchill between October and December, polar bear "high season," to view these magnificent creatures, usually from the safety of a tundra buggy vehicle. And although people come for the bears, they also discover beautiful Aurora Borealis during winter, and in summer, amazing beluga whales and the migration of many bird species. Visitors also enjoy the famous Miss Piggy C46 plane crash site, Cape Merry and Sloop Cove National Historic sites, and the Eskimo Museum.
