On October 5, 2011, the Government of Canada announced that it would build a new bridge for the St. Lawrence in Montreal to replace the existing Champlain Bridge.
Some of the major technical components of the project including the environmental assessment, as well as the preliminary design and financial analysis, have been completed. More detailed design and engineering and development of specifications will follow. An invitation to tender for construction will be issued and a contract will be awarded once the plans and specifications for the bridge have been finalized.
Construction for the New Bridge for the St. Lawrence corridor project (all components) is expected to be completed in 2020. The new bridge will be prioritized as part of the corridor project and will be in service in 2018.
