Preliminary Timeline

On October 5, 2011, the Government of Canada announced that it would build a new bridge for the St. Lawrence in Montreal to replace the existing Champlain Bridge. There are many components to this project and a lot of work to be done before construction can begin.

Some of the major technical components of the project include the environmental assessment, as well as the preliminary design and financial analysis, which are being done concurrently. More detailed design and engineering and development of specifications will follow. An invitation to tender for construction will be issued and a contract will be awarded once the plans and specifications for the bridge have been finalized. The new bridge is expected to open in 2021-2022, followed by the deconstruction of the existing bridge.
