About the Commuter Options Workshop

This one-day workshop provides essential guidance for employers that aspire to improve commuter options for their employees, and for those that face commuting-related challenges (e.g. problems with parking, employee recruitment or morale).

The workshop is designed to be offered by business groups, government agencies or non-profit organizations to interested employers. Workshop participants typically include facility managers, environmental officers, human resources personnel etc.

The workshop is highly participatory, while also allowing the instructor sufficient time to explain important subjects. It is designed to be delivered by an experienced instructor who is not necessarily an expert in transportation issues. The instructor ideally requires two to three days of preparation time to become familiar with the lecture content and exercises. It would be helpful if he or she also had time to research and add in local content available from a municipality, transit agency or other relevant organization, to make the workshop even more valuable for participants.

One goal of the workshop is to familiarize participants with the Commuter Options guide, so it is suggested that copies of the guide be provided to all participants who do not bring their own. Another goal is to provide participants with an opportunity to reflect on their own workplace situation, and compare it against the workplaces of other participants. For these reasons, several exercises have been included in the workshop to illustrate the wide-ranging circumstances, goals and approaches of different workplaces. Ultimately, participants should leave the workshop with a greater understanding of key issues, greater comfort in tackling their next steps, and greater enthusiasm for doing so.
