About

The ecoFREIGHT Program aimed to reduce the environmental and health effects of freight transportation through the use of technology. It is one of the initiatives under the ecoTRANSPORT Strategy which is part of the Government of Canada's ambitious agenda to protect our environment and the health of Canadians and to further our economic prosperity.

The ecoFREIGHT program consisted of six initiatives:

  • National Harmonization Initiative for the Trucking Industry: identified regulatory barriers and solutions in collaboration with provinces and territories, so that the Canadian trucking industry can embrace emissions-reducing technologies.

  • ecoENERGY for Fleets: reduced fuel use and emissions in commercial and institutional fleets via training, sharing of best practices, anti-idling campaigns, technical analysis to look for potential improvements and other technology opportunities. For more information on ecoENERGY for Fleets click here.

  • Freight Technology Demonstration Fund: established cost-shared demonstrations to test and measure new and underused freight transportation technologies in real-world conditions. For a complete list of funded project please click here.

  • Freight Technology Incentives: provided cost-shared funding to help purchase and install proven emission-reducing technologies. For a complete list of funded project please click here.

  • ecoFREIGHT Partnerships: built and maintained partnerships within the transportation sector to reduce emissions from freight transportation through fast and flexible voluntary actions that supported the regulatory framework.

  • Marine Shore Power: demonstrated the use of shore-based power for marine vessels in Canadian ports to reduce air pollution from idling ship engines in some of Canada's largest urban centres. A complete list of funded projects will be available shortly. For a complete list of funded project please click here.
