Port Metro Vancouver, Canada’s largest and busiest port authority, has taken steps to allow cruise ships to “plug-in” to British Columbia’s clean electric power at two of its Canada Place terminal berths when they are docked. Marine Shore Power, enables ships to turn off their auxiliary diesel engines while docked and connect to the city’s electrical grid using specially designed equipment to power the ship's electrical load (e.g. lighting, elevators, air conditioning, communication equipment etc.). Otherwise these ships would have to continue to burn fuel the whole of the stopover, which unfortunately would have contributed not only to greenhouse gas emissions, but also increased the concentration of smog causing pollutants in the city’s core. The Port Metro Vancouver shore power installation is the first of its kind in Canada and third in the world for cruise ships.
The following video shows how Marine Shore Power works and provides insightful interviews with representatives of the parties involved in making it happen.
