Video: Rail America

Four Canadian divisions of Rail America in Ontario and Nova Scotia received a contribution towards the purchase of diesel auxiliary power units (APUs) to be used with their locomotives. In total Rail America installed and tested twenty-four diesel APUs that allowed the locomotive to shut down during extreme temperatures by keeping the engine oil warm and batteries charged which ensured a reliable engine startup. In addition, the units provided heating or cooling when the locomotive was not running, further reducing the need to idle the locomotives. The quick return on investment from these APUs has convinced Rail America to implement the technology on a larger scale.
