Proponents for whom their project may require an environmental assessment (EA) are also encouraged to consult the Transport Canada Proponents' Guide for Environmental Assessment Pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. This Proponents' Guide has been prepared to provide guidance to proponents that have projects that are being assessed under the CEAA by Transport Canada.
Major resource projects carried out south of the 60th parallel may be subject to the Major Projects Management Office (MPMO) process. The MPMO was established to improve the performance of the federal regulatory system for major natural resource projects, in collaboration with other federal departments and agencies.
If your project is subject to a provincial or other EA process and it is also subject to CEAA, all legislative requirements must be met.
Timely and efficient EAs will result in more informed decision-making that is supportive of sustainable development. By considering environmental effects and mitigation early in project planning, potential delays and unnecessary costs can be avoided or reduced.
Major resource projects carried out north of the 60th parallel may be subject to the Northern Projects Management Office (NPMO) process. In September 2009, the NPMO was established as a core program within the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), with its mandate to support economic development in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
NPMO coordinates federal regulators, tracks projects, provides pathfinding guidance, and maintains the Crown consultation record for Northern resource development projects in its portfolio.
