The BionX PL350 retrofit is an example of a new class of vehicles called power-assisted bicycles (PAB), also known as electric bicycles or e-bikes. PABs include bicycles that are propelled by any combination of an electric motor and the cyclist's own energy.
The BionX retrofit consists of an electric motor, powered by a 36-volt lithium-manganese battery. It can be added to almost any bicycle to provide electrical pedalling assistance. The lowest assistance level (A1) adds 35% power in addition to the cyclist's effort, while the highest assistance level (A4) adds 300% power.
