Bathurst Sustainable Development is a not-for-profit organization and community group partner that works to facilitate the interaction of local community, business and government for the long-term mutual betterment of environmental quality, economic health and social well-being.

What are they doing?

This project will determine the feasibility of implementing an urban transit system in the city of Bathurst.

The project will:

  • Identify and assess all necessary information, opinions, needs, financial data, routes, etc., necessary to ensure the successful implementation of a sustainable transportation system;
  • Provide information to and receive input from all identified potential user groups, partners, and others who might contribute to this service;
  • Encourage, support, and provide individual citizens with an incentive to choose a more sustainable mode of transportation; and
  • Showcase the success of this project to the Canadian public and the world through various communication activities.

What did the project accomplish?

Notable results include:

Bathurst Sustainable Development conducted a citywide survey as well as 53 consultations with the public and local business and public institutions. A live transit demonstration was also held, providing free rides for citizens and the experience of riding transit, something new to many Bathurst residents. The proposal for transit service was so well received that city councillors report they are under a great deal of stress from so many citizens and businesses all relating to them their desire for city council to vote in favour of implementing a transit service. Bathurst Sustainable Development and the city of Bathurst are currently working together to implement transit service in the City in the coming year.

  • 53 consultations were conducted with the public that included information and presentations on a possible transit service
  • Surveys were conducted with 5,775 individuals with 4,562 potential riders identified
  • Outreach activities generated over 500,000 impressions through the media and direct contact
  • Over 21 offers have been made to allow bus stops, signage, and schedules to be posted and for bus passes to be available and sold. All destinations and stops on the proposed bus route agreed to facilitate a "naturally occurring" bus stop by placing benches both indoors and outside their foyers, lobbies and entrances.
  • Over 20 residential areas with high ridership potential were identified and over 25 top ridership destinations were identified
  • Over 1,400 unique visits per month to the project website
  • The feasibility study was completed on April 30, 2004
