How to Guide and Companion Programs for Small City Transit

Bathurst Sustainable Development (BSD) is an non-profit organization working to facilitate local community, business, and government actions for the long-term betterment of environmental quality, economic health, and social well-being in Bathurst.

What are they doing?

The City of Bathurst is examining all aspects of their pilot transit service in the form of a two-year test project. Test programs include:

  1. The How to Guide:

BSD is documenting and recording the history of the feasibility study experience as well as the start-up of the new service prototype during the pilot project. BSD has also identified that it wishes to develop and implement a "Companion Program" as well as conduct ridership incentives during the transit pilot in the City. The final publication from this project would be a "How to Guide" for establishing a transit service for a small city and accompanying Companion Programs.

  2. The Companion Program:

Making the transition from the status quo to public transit will not happen instantly or on its own. One of the many barriers to overcome is making the lifestyle change from being "personal automobile dependant" to multi-modal. BSD wishes to assist Bathurst's citizens with this transition in the form of a "Companion Program". Citizens will need assistance making the change in their life styles from the personal automobile, and some may benefit from being partnered with a "companion". This companion could be an individual citizen or it could be a group, organization, business or industry.

The goal of the companion program is to assist citizens in becoming comfortable and confident with the bus system. The companions will need to assess if the citizens in the group have reached that level of independence and comfort or if the experience requires another outing.
