The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) is a not-for-profit national association whose mission is to lead and support the development and growth of cycling in Canada through programs, leadership development, and technical expertise. Its ambition is to increase the rate of participation in cycling and ensure the best representation of cycling by Canadians.

What are they doing?

The CAN-BIKE Development Project is designed to increase the numbers of people using their bikes for transportation or recreational purposes through building capacity for local communities to offer CAN-BIKE courses. The aim of the project is to meet market demands for improved levels of proficiency and confidence of commuter and transportation cyclists throughout Canada.

CAN-BIKE training helps overcome the main barrier/restriction to bicycle use - fear of traffic - by increasing the skill and confidence level of graduates of the program. CAN-BIKE teaches a valuable life skill which promotes cycling as a green, healthy mode of transportation that works well in urban areas where the built form can accommodate bicycle use for short distance trips to work, shopping, school or daily activities. The benefits to air quality, the reduction of congestion on the roads, personal health and fitness, and improved quality of life caused by increased bicycle use are well documented. CAN-BIKE training also supports an increase in recreational riding for those living in more rural areas and for increased bicycle tourism.

The CAN-BIKE Cycling Development Project will increase the use of bicycles for transportation in target areas by: building capacity for communities to offer CAN-BIKE courses in all provinces of Canada through a targeted program to develop/expand a sustainable local instructor base in each province; developing web/e-communication tools for both instructors and the general public; supporting CAN-BIKE course delivery through marketing/branding of CAN-BIKE; and working on curriculum development to meet local community needs.
