Calgary Vehicle Scrappage Pilot Project

The Alberta Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) is a non-profit association comprised of diverse stakeholders from three sectors (government, industry, and non-government organizations (such as health and environmental groups)). Senior representatives from each sector, are committed to developing and applying a comprehensive air quality management system for the people of Alberta through a collaborative, consensus-based process. CASA's Vehicle Emissions Team (VET) is initiating this scrappage project.

What are they doing?

VET aims to remove 600 older (pre-1988) vehicles from Calgary roads through incentives of 12 free consecutive monthly transit passes or a $500 credit for a newer used or new car.

  • Public awareness and education about the scrappage program will help Calgarians understand more about the impacts of old and poorly maintained vehicles.
  • Scrapping of the 600 vehicles will reduce criteria air contaminants by over 1000 tonnes and greenhouse gas emissions by 5000 tonnes.
  • Effectiveness of awareness and public education initiatives will be tested through two professional surveys. These will also gauge the public acceptance of a more widespread vehicle scrappage program.

Status

To be completed by March 31, 2002.
