Clean Air Champions' goal is to improve air quality by using respected athletes to motivate and educate Canadians to adopt practices and lifestyles that enhance both environmental and personal health.

Their prime objective is to improve the health of the community and of its individuals by achieving tangible results in the area of (1) education of youth in the subjects of air quality, climate change, and physical health; (2) increased physical activity and fitness through active transportation; (3) better air quality and reduced pollution-related health effects; (4) reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

What are they doing?

CAA-I involved the delivery of a curriculum-linked, web-based education program aimed at grade 5 and 6 students held in 5 schools in the Greater Toronto Area. Its goals were to educate youth about air quality, sustainable transportation, active transportation, and related health issues, and motivate them to adopt more active transportation lifestyles to ultimately reduce air pollution.

CAA-II will target Junior and early Senior High School level students (grades 8-9) and will be delivered nationally in four city centres, over two time frames during the school year.

CAA-II has the following objectives and goals:

  • To educate a key target youth audience between the ages of 13 and 16 about sustainable transportation, air quality issues, and healthy lifestyle choices;
  • To deliver a national program in 4 city centres by spring 2005;
  • To reduce air pollution through promoting the use of more sustainable forms of transportation;
  • To employ national team athletes as spokespersons and role models;
  • To measurably increase levels of physical activity through active means of transportation;
  • To inform students, their families and other Canadians about the benefits of adopting alternatives to private vehicle use including community, environmental and personal health benefits;
  • To provide a new and exciting "participatory" approach to encourage youth and their families to adopt more active lifestyles; and
  • To partner with other organizations that share similar goals so as to leverage each other’s work rather than duplicate it.
