This project addresses the growing trends towards electric transportation - including electric drive vehicles, hybrid vehicles and emerging fuel cell vehicles. The project will introduce students to this emerging area of business and industry by developing a workshop manual whereby teams of students can carry out the conversion of a conventional vehicle to an electric vehicle.
The Electric Vehicle Society of Canada is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the goals of sustainable transportation via disseminating all information relating to electric and hybrid-electric vehicles. The Society’s members come mostly from the industrial community, many of whom have engineering or scientific backgrounds. The Society also maintains strong links with schools, technical colleges and training institutes as it strives to disseminate accurate data on sustainable transportation options.
The project is designed to produce a workshop manual that will guide students (enrolled in grades 11 and 12 or community college) in the conversion of a standard gasoline-powered vehicle to an electric vehicle (EV). The manual will be prepared by a team of engineering, transportation and environmental experts from the Society. The approximately 100-page manual will comprise four main sections. The first is an introduction to electric vehicles and sustainable transportation, including environmental issues and greenhouse gas generation. The second and main section will be the step-by-step conversion program culminating in completion of the electric vehicle. The third section sets out an evaluation program for testing the EV and requires that the students not only test the vehicle performance but also measure the environmental impact of their project - from gasoline savings through to greenhouse gas and critical air pollutant reductions. The final section is a resource guide directing interested schools towards sources of support and also suggesting how the project can be used in promotional and other activities aimed at wider dissemination of sustainable transportation principles.
Results will be posted upon receipt of a final report.
