Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Forestry Haul Operations

Image - Transport

Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC) is conducting research which could possibly lead to a 20% reduction of annual emissions associated with transportation in the forest industry (more than one million tonnes annually).

What are they doing?

They are doing research to develop an evolutionary truck design. The project has three phases: technology evaluation, validation and technology transfer.

  • Phase 1: Design "Star" Truck Develop specifications for a "Star" truck which incorporates technology capable of improving efficiency, fuel economy and payload.
  • Phase 2: Demonstration Pilot Project Build a second generation "Star" truck to incorporate technology from the first phase. Monitor the "Star" truck for one year to validate the results from Phase 1.
  • Phase 3: Develop Technology-Transfer Program Educate truck managers on how to reduce fuel consumption and encourage implementation of sustainable transportation activities in the forest industry.

Status

Project to be completed by March 31, 2002.
