Municipalities for Green Mobility

The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is the oldest environmental organization in Nova Scotia and has been in existence since 1971. It has 750 members, 150 active volunteers, and seven issue committees focusing on transportation, wilderness preservation and forestry, coastal issues, urban planning, renewable energy, agriculture and food, and marine conservation. Its aim is to encourage a society in Nova Scotia that respects and protects nature and also provides environmentally and economically sustainable jobs for its citizens.

What are they doing?

Municipalities in Nova Scotia are required to complete Integrated Community Sustainability Plans (ICSPs) in order to receive federal gas tax allocations through the province. The ICSPs require municipalities to create a 30-year community vision that addresses environmental, social, cultural and economic issues, and therefore provide an excellent and unique opportunity to incorporate and advance sustainable transportation in long-term municipal planning.

The goal of MGM is to work with planning staff in three municipalities to ensure that their ICSPs incorporate sustainable transportation best practices. The broader goal of the project is to create a sustainable transportation best practice tool that all municipalities in Nova Scotia can use to incorporate sustainable transportation into their ICSPs and increase the sustainability of their transportation system.

As the broader goal of the project is to create a best practices tool that can be used by the 55 municipalities in Nova Scotia, EAC will select three communities with distinct characteristics. Communities will represent a range in the following criteria:  Municipality Type (predominantly urban, small town or rural), population, area (large, medium or small), density, engagement in ICSP process (high, medium or low), planning approach, staff support and council support.
