Équiterre's mission is to help build a citizens' movement by promoting ecologically sound and socially equitable choices at the individual and communal levels and to promote sustainable transportation, energy efficiency, ecological agriculture, and fair trade.

What are they doing?

The project has two major goals. The primary goal is the inspiration for all Équiterre's work in the area of sustainable transportation: to reduce private car use among university and college students in the greater Montreal area, especially among the student population of the University of Montreal. The secondary goal is to develop an approach and innovative tools to help break down barriers to change in transportation habits.

Specific objectives are:

  • to identify barriers that keep young adults from changing their transportation habits and find the solutions that they believe are most persuasive;
  • to develop additional concrete resources and an intervention tool (the personalized transportation plan) to break down the barriers; make the resources available during awareness activities and online; and test the tool with young adults;
  • to offer personalized service (information support and accompaniment) to help students change their transportation habits, helping them create a personalized transportation plan (first on the University of Montreal campus and gradually on other university and college campuses as well);
  • to organize special events at the University of Montreal to celebrate Car-Free Day and encourage people on campus to attend them.

Secondary objectives based on these activities and continuing the 2003-2004 campaign are:

  • to increase awareness and use of the ride-share program on the University of Montreal campus (and at other post-secondary institutions as well if data from them can be collected);
  • to increase the percentage of students who cycle regularly or at least once a week to the University of Montreal campus (and to other post-secondary institutions as well if data from them can be collected);
  • to increase the percentage of students who take public transit to the University of Montreal campus (and to other post-secondary institutions if data from them can be collected);
  • to improve information about alternative modes of transportation available on campus.
