Planning Active Transportation Communities

Go for Green is a national non-profit, charitable organization encouraging Canadians to pursue healthy, outdoor physical activity that protects, enhances, or restores the environment. We identify and share community-driven solutions that make a positive contribution to Canadian society

What are they doing?

Go for Green is conducting transportation education/planning sessions in as many as three communities in each of the targeted provinces/territories (Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, PEI, NWT = up to 15 workshops). Invited participants will include political leaders, municipal staff, health-care professionals, and members of the public, especially those who have demonstrated an interest in Active Transportation (AT) issues. The planning sessions will incorporate multiple components, including:

  1. An online appraisal of community AT attitudes;
  2. A two-day workshop in the community;
  3. Development of a community vision and 10-point action plan for the advancement of AT in the next six months;
  4. A review of the community's progress by issuing a report card of progress at the end of the six-month action plan.

Go for Green will work with the communities involved to encourage them to take part in existing Active Transportation projects such as the Commuter Challenge and Active and Safe Routes to School. Resources, such as the Active Transportation Tool Kit, will be provided to each community during the planning session, and staff will be available for ongoing consultation and support throughout the action plan period. The communities will be provided with the most up-to-date information through Go for Green's Active Transportation Listserve

In addition to the individual community benefits, at the conclusion of the project Go for Green will issue a report of the results of all the communities involved.

The "Planning Active Transportation Communities" project will promote the improvement of the local environment and increase in physical activity among Canadian residents by engaging communities in a process to evaluate and improve their Active Transportation environment.
