Vivre en Ville, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1994, is a Quebec association for viable urban, rural, and small town development. Vivre en Ville works to educate those involved in land use planning and management and encourages them to apply the principles of sustainable development. Vivre en Ville has over 300 corporate and individual members across Quebec.
In Quebec City, promotion of modes of sustainable transportation is focused on public transit. Employers, and as a result their employees, are rarely targeted during educational campaigns related to the environment and sustainable development. MultiMobile will suggest additional sustainable transportation measures (walking, cycling, carpooling, and car sharing) to employers and employees currently or potentially involved in the L'abonne BUS du Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) bus pass program. Combined with public transit, these are valuable alternatives, but people have to be educated about them and good infrastructure has to be available if they are going to be chosen.
This project has three components:Modes of sustainable transportation in addition to the bus will be promoted by preparing and distributing a brochure to employers, and by using the communications systems of the RTC, of the municipality, and of Vivre en Ville. The brochure will also be distributed to employees. It will contain descriptions of the 4 selected modes of transportation (walking, cycling, carpooling, and car sharing) and their socio-economic and environmental benefits.
To make up for employers' lack of resources and to facilitate adoption of the transportation solutions, Vivre en Ville will support interested employers by provide technical expertise for installing bike racks, setting up carpooling software, and organizing theme days.
Vivre en Ville will develop and analyse indicators to determine the project's impact and will make improvements while the project is underway if necessary.
In summary, MultiMobile aims to reduce utilization of single-occupant vehicles by residents of the Quebec City area traveling between home and work, through the promotion and implementation of employer- and employee-targeted measures additional to or in combination with the bus pass program. It will allow the public to adopt sustainable travel behaviours and to know about the economic, social and environmental reasons for doing so.
