Poor air quality, high costs to operate vehicles and lost family time are among the negative effects of urban transportation. These problems are increasing in many cities but there have been few initiatives to reduce single occupancy car use and promote more sustainable modes of transportation such as carpooling and cycling. Pollution Probe is expanding the delivery of the S-M-A-R-T Movement Programme, a trip reduction tool for employers and employees.
Pollution Probe is a Canadian charitable organization that works in partnership with all sectors of society to protect health by promoting clean air and water. It defines environmental problems through research, promotes understanding through education and presses for practical solutions through advocacy.
S-M-A-R-T Movement is a workplace-based trip reduction program that is directed at reducing employee single-occupant car trips. It is both an information resource and support service to help guide medium to large organizations that want to reduce employee car trips. The program aims to educate and inform employers and employees that reducing drive-alone car trips will save money and time, reduce stress and improve the quality of our air and facilitate corporate efforts to help employees make sustainable commuter choices. Pollution Probe encourages S-M-A-R-T participants to consider ways of group commuting (e.g. public transit, carpooling), schedule changes (e.g. teleworking, flex scheduling), and active commuting (e.g. walking and cycling) with a variety of resources, services and incentives.
This trip reduction program initially involved 5 pilot organizations in the Greater Toronto Area in year one and will expand to fifteen organizations in the Greater Toronto Area by June 2005, with the intention of delivering the program across the country in other large urban centres in Canada. The program will help deliver measurable reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants, as well as provide important lessons from which to engage additional organizations in similar workplace-based trip reduction initiatives.
Results will be posted upon receipt of a final report.
